Whitehall cost cutters have spent a massive £8.5 million doing up their London HQ.
Ministers were lambasted and accused of a “ludicrous waste of taxpayers’ money” after the bill for renovating the Cabinet Office was uncovered.
Details of the refurbishment project came about from data posted on the Government’s transparency website setting out spending of over £25,000.
The website shows £8,505,365.02 has been spent since May 2010 on “refurbishment” or “accommodation works” to 70 Whitehall – the Grade I-listed building where Cabinet Office ministers and staff are based, including Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
A source from the Cabinet Office source said that the costs to the office refurbishment specialists included efforts to make the building more green by installing insulation, double glazing and light sensors, as well as improving disabled access.
They insisted the refurbishment would also bring staff from other buildings to reduce overall estate costs by £100 million, but the renovation plans were attacked by opposing MPs.
